Bitwise operators are mostly used to store true/false flags 0=false/1=false. If you use a unsigned byte it can store upto 8 flags. This can be and was used in small devices where devices have memory/storage constraints

@Bob: In Java, you can't use the ^ symbol for exponents. It is only used for the exclusive-or operator. @Ed: The plastic end of your shoelace is called an aglet ;)

Also the "^" means to the power of, i.e 2^4 means 2 to the power 4, or 2*2*2*2. Excellent video, thanks dude :)
